Small subunit ribosome biogenesis

Figure Small subunit ribosome biogenesis

The small ribosomal subunit is responsible for decoding of genetic information. In eukaryotes, small subunit assembly involves the initial formation of a large nucleolar particle termed the small subunit processome. Within this complex, the immature small ribosomal subunit is chaperoned by more than 50 ribosome assembly factors. We have analyzed the formation of this particle as a function of transcription (Chaker-Margot et al. 2015), determined the roles of multi-protein complexes within it (Hunziker et al. 2016) and determined its structure by cryo-EM (Chaker-Margot et al. 2017, Barandun et al. 2017). Emerging principles of these studies (Barandun et al. 2018) are the basis for several lines of research in the lab.
